Markets and fresh fish in Santa Pola

Santa Pola has one of the largest fishing fleets on the Spanish Mediterranean, and you can buy its catch the same evening. Here is when and where.

The big street market: Monday and Saturday

The weekly market (mercadillo) has more than 300 stalls: fruit and vegetables, cheese, olives, clothes and household goods. It runs on Mondays from 7:00 to 13:30 and Saturdays from 7:00 to 14:00 on Avinguda de Albacete, right next to the bus station.

From Blanca Rosa it is a 13-minute walk (950 m). Go early for the best produce and before the midday heat in summer.

Mercado Central

The covered market on Plaça Maestro Quislant has fishmongers, butchers and fruit stalls. It is open Monday to Friday from 7:00 to 14:00 and Saturday from 7:00 to 14:30. It is a 13-minute walk (900 m) from the apartment.

Fresh fish at the port in the evening

The boats come in during the afternoon. After the auction, fishermen sell their catch at stalls next to the fishing port, Monday to Friday from 17:30. Come a little after half past five for the widest choice.

The fishermen's own shop, the Peixatería de la Cofradía at C/ Muelle 36, sells the same fish Monday to Saturday from 9:15 to 13:30 and in the evening from 17:00 to 21:30 (in summer from 17:30 to 22:00). It is closed on Sundays and on Monday mornings.

Watching the fish auction

On weekdays from about 16:00 visitors can watch the auction of the "Peix de Santa Pola" in the fish market building (lonja) at the port, about a 13-minute walk from the apartment. The tourist office also runs guided visits of the port and the auction.

Supermarkets for everyday shopping

For the daily basics, the Masymas supermarket is in the next block, a 2-minute walk, and Mercadona is about 9 minutes away.
